General management

The trend is for specialization in management. Even general management is now a specialization. Every academic domain looks at creating highly specialized body of knowledge for a narrowly defined task .  Most of the MBAs are now specialists, and the most sought after job is that of a staff specialist than a line manager who is supposed to have that vital general management skills.

Well it might still be too early for me (8 months of job). But I am of the opinion that general management helps in more ways than we could think when in college. Even in an specialist's job, we get the advantage of having a perspective on almost all the (mgmt) subjects and hence can take on additional work which might not be mainstream but yet important.
